Northern Exposure--Day 44

Our travels have taken us farther north to Joanne's hometown of Duluth, Minnesota. As you travel north on Interstate 35 you climb up a great hill before arriving in Duluth. When you pass over the top and start down you get a beautiful view of the harbor of Duluth and Superior, Wisconsin. These two neighboring cities are referred to as the Twin Ports. The picture to the left was taken at the Rest Area/Tourist Information Center. As we descended the hill we had a panaramic view of the harbor below. As many times as we have made this trip into Duluth I never fail to be impressed with this view.

We are currently set up at our favorite RV spot here in Duluth. This is not really an RV Park as you would expect. This is the Lakehead Boat Basin, a working boat yard and marina. During the winter months, when all the boats must come out of the water, the area where we are parked is used for boat storage. To keep the land producing income they have installed full RV hookups. This is located on a strip of land that divides the Superior Bay from Lake Superior. At the head of this strip is a canal that allows the boats and ships to move from the lake to the shipping piers in the bay. To get across the canal we must cross a large lift bridge. We have a spectacular view of the bay and the harbor, across the marina.

While here we have had a chance to visit with Joanne's friend Sharon, who we saw while we were in the Minneapolis area. She and her husband, Dan, have been building a great cabin on a lake out west of Duluth, on land where her parents had originally had a small cabin. On our way to the cabin we stopped by and picked up Joanne's brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Marilyn. Sharon lived just down the street from Jo's family when they were growing up here in Duluth. Although Jo and Sharon have seen each other several times over the years, Sharon had not seen Roger in over 40 years. Later that evening, Roger and Marilyn came down to the Boat Basin to see our coach. Also, Marilyn had baked Jo a belated birthday cake.
